Chicken of the Sea’s parent company Thai Union publishes our strategic sustainability goals on its SeaChange® 2030 website. Earth Day 2026 represents an opportunity to reflect on those long-standing commitments and examine how far we’ve come in reshaping the seafood industry to sustain a better future for all.
Let’s look in on the latest SeaChange® 2030 solutions for People and Planet and share some of our successful efforts from the past year.
Marine Stewardship Council Certification for Yellowfin Tuna
2025 saw not one, but two Indian Ocean purse seine fleets achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for sustainable fishing of yellowfin tuna. The Marine Stewardship Council evaluates commercial fisheries for sustainability and awards products sourced from those fisheries with their distinctive MSC “blue fish” label.
Both the AGAC and ANABAC fleets are now MSC-certified, representing a major milestone for Thai Union’s ongoing work with the SIOTI Fishery Improvement Project. Thai Union has a standing SeaChange® 2030 commitment to sourcing 100% of our tuna from fishing operations that are MSC certified, actively undergoing evaluation for certification or are committed to a fishery improvement program.
More sustainably caught yellowfin tuna means more options for buyers to meet their own institutional commitments to ethical seafood sourcing. Watch this space for more good news on the Indian Ocean yellowfin front as we continue to pursue our goal of 100% responsible wild caught seafood.
Leading the Way on Carbon Disclosure
For compliance purposes, Thai Union regularly reports to CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) on its environmental impact. CDP scores and shares the climate data it receives, so the public can track the progress of organizations in their countries and communities.
This past year, Thai Union earned a CDP rating of “A-”. This puts us in the organization’s “Leadership” category. Thai Union is proud to promote transparency throughout our supply chain on our path to net zero emissions.
Taking to the Air to Reduce Ocean Plastics
Each year, a staggering amount of netting and other plastic fishing equipment gets lost or discarded in our planet’s oceans. This so-called “ghost gear” can disrupt ecosystems for decades to come. Combined with other plastics from land-based sources, ghost gear adds up to millions of tons of plastic, polluting the waters we depend on for seafood.
Thai Union works in cooperation with alliances like the Global Ghost Gear Initiative and the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation to address this problem. However, 2025 saw our ocean plastics reduction efforts get a lift from a new partner—the Aerial Recon & Recovery Initiative (ARRI).
ARRI and Thai Union are using aerial drones and artificial intelligence to scan 12 square miles of coastal waters near Koh Phangan, Thailand. These scans are expected to map and target 3.2 tons of debris for cleanup. Thai Union is also partnering with other local organizations to recycle the plastics collected and turn non-recyclable materials into building bricks.
Sustainability Is a Sound Investment
Thai Union’s SeaChange® 2030 efforts don’t happen in a vacuum. We truly believe that good corporate citizenship is just good business, and investors around the globe are taking notice.
FTSE Russell (a division of the London Stock Exchange Group) regularly publishes its FTSE4Good Index, which evaluates the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices of companies traded on its “ASEAN 5” Index. Thai Union most recently achieved an ESG score of 4.3, charting us in the 92nd percentile of that index.
Closer to home, Thai Union also received an “AA” rating from the Stock Exchange of Thailand, which publishes its own yearly ESG ratings.
These recent initiatives and awards underscore Thai Union’s purpose in pursuing “Healthy Living, Healthy Oceans.” When you choose Chicken of the Sea and Thai Union for your foodservice, you can be assured of reliable service and sustainable products from a partner whose global supply chain is purposefully driven by trust and transparency.
